Needle-felting for Beginners

Six-week course

Have you ever wanted to learn how to needle-felt using your own photos as inspiration?

I can show you how to create the most beautiful, tactile pieces of work which will encompass your individual creativity rather than everyone producing exactly the same.

This short course will give you everything you need to start your journey into creating your own creative pieces from an artist’s perspective rather than as a simplistic craft.

What I provide

All equipment, needles, mat, wool, embellishments, pre-felt, fibres. Resources to work from. My expertise in teaching and demonstrating! Plus, coffee, teas and cake …of course.

What you will need

Over the six weeks all that you will need is a few photographs of a seascape, landscape and favourite botanicals! This means you will create something that is meaningful to you. There will be plenty of resources provided to choose from otherwise.

What will you learn

  • From the very beginning! What equipment you will need, how to use and where to buy. Different types of wool and their uses, and where to buy.
  • Planning a composition, how to get started with a simple thumbnail sketch. How to collect inspiration and how to work from photographs…what to leave in and what to leave out!
  • Learn from an artist’s perspective, painting with wool as an art rather than a craft. The formal elements of art, using colour, tone, shape and form, scale and proportion, perspective, how to create light and shadow. Learning what to put in the background, midground and foreground. Keeping it real rather than naïve.
  • How to create different backgrounds, using interesting fibres and laying out the initial design.
  • Adding the details…for a landscape, clouds, drystone walls, trees, fences, sheep and animals, grasses and mosses. For a seascape – waves, beaches, pebbles and rocks, boats and lighthouses. For flowers and plants, how to create petals of a flower so they are not flat, how to use fabrics, fibres and embellishments to add interest to your creation.
  • How to finish and mount ready for framing.
